Apple has made its $29 iPhone replacement battery program effective immediately for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later who feels like their phone is a little slow or doesn’t hold a charge.
To get your low-cost battery replacement, available through through December 2018, the best way is to make an appointment at a Genius Bar via Apple’s website or its Support app. There, Apple may be able to do a same-day repair or offer you a loaner phone.
To make an appointment, head to getsupport.apple.com, select iPhone, select Battery, Power, & Charging, select “The topic is not listed,” type in that you need a battery replacement in the text box, and select Visit the Genius Bar, at which point you’ll need to sign in with your Apple ID and select a time and location. The process is similar on the app.
Mail in Your iPhone
If you aren’t near an Apple Store, go to Apple’s website and get a mail-order box for your iPhone. That will cost an additional $6.95 for shipping and handling. With this option, you may be out of a phone for 3-5 business days, unless you have AppleCare+ and pay for Express Replacement Service.
With either option, make sure you back up your phone before handing it over. If you’ll be without a device for a few days, you can move your phone’s SIM card into another phone from the same wireless carrier. Or buy a low-cost or used flip phone for your carrier from Amazon.
If you have an iPad or a Mac, you can still get iMessages and place FaceTime calls using your Apple ID.
Not for Older iPhones
Note that the replacement plan is only for iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, or 7 Plus models.
