Question about D&D?

I am thinking about getting into Dungeons and Dragons. I love board games and strategy games, and RPGs. I looked at some youtube videos and I was surprised. It just seemed like a structured form of...playing with toys. Is it something I should get into? Is there strategy and fun combat/roleplay? Or is it just a fancy excuse to play with toys and play make-believe?

Depends on the group you play with. Some are more RP heavy than others, but not all D&D experiences are the same, so don't get discouraged if the first time out isn't exactly what you were looking for?
